Program

Huzzah! Almost there!

Registration opens on 3pm Friday August 14. The Kids Meet and Greet starts at 4 with Andy the Musical Scientist and ice cream! And ping pong. And sitting outside our event space by our Field listening to the birds sing. UBC is a beautiful campus.

Then about 6, the Adult Meet and Greet starts in Hospitality Hall with Dr. Nigel regaling us with silly stuff. There's pupus, like make your own tortillas, 2 each, but it's mostly snack stuff so plan for dinner somewhere. https://food.ubc.ca/feedme/ At 8 the 1980 movie starts with popcorn in the same room. And that's Friday.

The Games Room upstairs will be open throughout the event. We have boxes of games from RainCity Games and Diana Powell, our resident Game Mistress. You are welcome to bring your own. The Games Room is a place where you can compete in tournaments, get together with old friends, meet new ones, or just chill with a jigsaw. There are windows along one side that allow you to look down on the festivities.

On Saturday breakfast at Totem across the street, for those who signed up, opens at 7am. Then, starting at 9am, there will be two streams of speakers upstairs in Orchard Commons. Speaker Room One and Speaker Room Two.

Kids will gather in the Ping Pong area ouside for activities from 9-11am.

Lunch is from 11am - 12:30 and you can check out some of the spots on campus that long to feed you. https://food.ubc.ca/feedme/

Speakers continue after lunch and for the kids there's a Scavenger Hunt devised by Kristin Hopkins who grew up on the UBC campus and knows all the cool spots to explore.

At 4 we all get to rest and then get into our costumes. Remember we're honouring Expo 86, a world's fair. Party Like It's 1986! The Sat Gala starts at 6pm in the Dining Room right beside Hospitality Hall. At 7:30 Mike Harcourt will present his Keynote Speech.

THEN...right there and then, while many sit with their coffee and desserts, those who wish can join the Silent Disco (Bring your headphones and phone with a Spotify account) in the same room! Meanwhile in Hospitality Hall, the SeeStar stargazing group will convene with reps from the RSCP who will demonstrate modern telescopes. Then they'll all head out to look at the real sky while the rest of us find our beds.

Sunday, at 9am we will have the AGM in Hospitality Hall. All Mensa Canada members are encouraged to attend. Hemingway Hopkins will hold a D&D For Kids session in the Games Room. At 11am there is the awards ceremony to honour exceptional volunteers. And aren't we all exceptional volunteers?

THEN... wait a minute!! Who let a dog into Hospitality Hall??!! It's Sophie the Champion Agility Dog with her person Ron! Ron will show us what it takes to train a Smart Dog - much easier than a Smart Kid - and we'll follow them outside to see a demonstration. And there's a Quidditch Match happening right there on our field!!

Are you tired yet? I hope so. And full and happy.

THEN: all done, all out, by 3pm. Orchard Commons is shutting the door behind us as they start making the place ready for students.

This would be a great time to head to Vancouver Island to see Victoria and/or Butchard Gardens. Or visit Nanaimo on the fast Hullo Ferry to see the whales and sand castles.
